San Francisco Waterfront with Holiday Lights

It is this time of the the year. The Thanksgiving feast is over, black Friday lines are winding down, and the Christmas trees lots are already set up. Yes, just an other four weeks until Christmas. Every year, some of the San Francisco downtown buildings turn decorative lights on to celebrate the holidays. This changes […]

Tartines de Rillette

It doesn’t take a lot of work to make this little appetizer, assuming there is some Rillette left in the fridge. We get ours here in San Francisco from the French butcher Olivier down the street. It is delicious! And don’t forget to eat cornichons with the tartines; not pictured 🙂

Brown Paper Bag

I was in the mood to play with my photo toys tonight. Didn’t really know what to use as subject until I saw this innocent brown paper bag. I played with different lighting schemes and added color gels to my strobes. But in the end, I liked this almost monochromatic version the best.

Old chevy truck with crab traps

The commercial crab season is just around the corner. Down at Pillar Point Harbor in El Granada, folks where busy preparing their traps. Piles and piles of traps. Some stacked on the ground, some still on the truck.

Merced River with El Capitan and its Reflection

We spent last weekend in Yosemite enjoying the fall colors. While walking along Merced River, I discovered this spot with El Capitan and a nice reflection. Initially, I walked a bit further and discovered a lot of photographers on the other side of the Merced River taking in the scenery from Valley View. That’s not […]

Half Dome and Elm at Sunrise

Right now in late October is a good time to make sunrise pictures. The light is beautiful and sunrise is rather late in the morning. For a while now, I was looking forward to photograph the famous Elm tree in Yosemite’s Cook’s Meadow backlit by the rising sun. As it turned out, I was not […]

Bay Bridge Construction

The construction of the new Bay Bridge is advancing. The new tower is up, the skyway is almost complete, and the cables are next. Current status and more background informations can be found at BayBridgeInfo.org. I am looking forward to the day the bridge is finished and the old span is gone. At the same […]

Everyone needs a break, once in a while!

A while ago, hummingbirds discovered the flowers on our balcony. They seem to like them. They come by, buzz around, and are gone in an instant. To take pictures of hummingbirds, you need to plan for it and have a setup where everything is in place. You know that they will stop by right in […]

Quiche à la tomate – Tomato Tart

What do you do when you have some friends coming over for brunch and you didn’t really plan for it? The day before, I went to the farmers market and got some nice and colorful heirloom tomatoes. In our fridge, we always have eggs, cheese, butter, and creme. So we have about everything to make […]

Spritz

The temperatures in San Francisco today reminded me of our recent vacation and made me long for a Spritz…. Spritz is a wine based aperitif (white wine, Aperol, sparkling water) served in the Veneto region of Italy and also in Ticino, the Italian part of Switzerland. I was really surprised when I found a bottle […]

Yosemite – A different sunset

Sunset pictures of Yosemite usually include some of the typical features such as Half Dome or El Capitan. I have a few of those too and love them! Sunday, on the way back from Tuolumne Meadows, the sun was setting and we got glimpse here and there showing how the sky turned. And there was […]

San Francisco and Bay Bridge at Dusk

A few months ago, we were on a pier next to the Ferry Building during the evening twilight hours. I was taking some long-time exposures of the waterfront and the Bay Bridge. I like the feeling these black&white images provide. Image exposure times of more than a minute help to smooth out movements. The ocean […]

Evening at San Francisco’s Baker Beach

Last Saturday I went to San Francisco’s Baker Beach to take some sunset pictures with the cloudy sky. Only down at the beach I realized that the Escape from Alcatraz Triatlon will happen the next day. Once the runners past this mark, there is a right turn and then it goes up, all the way […]

Full Moon

I was looking forward to get some nice full moon pictures. But these past few days, rain clouds made it almost impossible. I got a few hints of a moon, but nothing exciting. Today, I finally got a clean view of a 99.6% full moon.

Verrines – Edible Art

The other day at a dinner party, I got to taste some verrines. Loved it! I couldn’t pass the chance to take some pictures while our friends prepared these delicious appetizers. Verrines, a culinary trend coming from France, are small glasses filled with layered ingredients. They can be sweet or savory and served for appetizers […]

Peach Crumble

This is my first crumble I made. It was much easier than expected and the result was very pleasing. In fact I liked it so much that this will definitely not be the last crumble I made. As we had one leftover crumble at the end of the evening, I had something to play with.
